I am not sure whether this was a popular dish in Eastern Europe. I know it was a popular dish in my grandmother's house. I have never seen this dish anywhere else. It connects me with grandmother as no other Jewish dish can. It is her personal gift to me!
I used a Joan Nathan recipe which calls for broiling. I have since uncovered recipe that is more likely similar to the one my grandmother used, which calls for boiling. My family enjoyed this unique dish, even my dad said it reminded him of his mother's kitchen.
I have enjoyed experimenting with family favorites. It has given me an opportunity to go back to my childhood and have private conversations with family long gone. I wish I had been old enough appreciate the history of dishes like this and as Elizabeth Ehrlich did, learn in the center of a Jewish home and life - the kitchen!
